Palestinian Territories Operation Brasstacks was launched by the Indian Army in November 1986 to simulate a full-scale struggle on India's western border. The exercise was the most important ever conducted in India; it included 9 infantry, three mechanised, three armoured divisions, and one air assault division, in addition to three impartial armoured brigades. It led to tensions with Pakistan and a subsequent rapprochement in mid-1987. Once the dimensions of the Pakistani incursion was realised, the Indian Army quickly mobilised about 200,000 troops, and Operation Vijay was launched. However, because the heights have been beneath Pakistani control, India was at a transparent strategic disadvantage. From their observation posts, the Pakistani forces had a transparent line-of-sight to put down indirect artillery hearth on NH 1A, inflicting heavy casualties on the Indians.
